(Licentiate of Optometric Science) from the A.C.O. in 1953 following training as an ex-serviceman (Navy). He set up practice in Echuca immediately afterwards. He married a local, Claire Trebilcock. As the practice grew, he set up a visiting practice at the rear of Trebilcock's Jewellery business in Kyabram.
