Description Of Item: Grey hammertone finish electric motor 180 x 95 x 90 mm with attached plate imprinted British Made, 200/250 Volts AC, LBS/IN 10 RPM 4.5 HP, Rating Cont. Ref. No. 23/04 1807, Built to BSS 170 Class E Insulation. The motor shaft has a turned extension piece with tapered end design to take accessories for contact lens manufacture and modification. Accessories are: 20 clear plastic domes with radii varying from 6.30 mm to 10. 5 mm, 8 polishing hoods, 2 brass fittings engraved 60 and 90 with recesses designed to hold contact lenses, an adaptor for tools with a smaller shaft diameter, 2 spherical ceramic grindstones and 2 paper covered sticks of polish. Selected items are on display in the Museum Gallery. Motor and selection of accessories in gallery display.
Historical Significance: Tools for scleral contact lens manufacture and modification were required by optometrists involved in early contact lens fitting and prescription.
