Description Of Item: Painting, 400 x 500 mm, oil on canvas board in an unglazed decorative gilt frame, signed B Collin 79 in bottom right corner.
Historical Significance: Charles Wright (1912-2003) was a South Australian optometrist with a great interest in history. He was the official historian of the Australian Optometrists Association and wrote a book on the history of the optometry in Australia that was published in 1988 by the Association. It is an invaluable source of historical information. Wright was also active in community affairs and was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1977. The artist Professor H Barry Collin (1933-) graduated LOSc from the Australian College of Optometry in 1953 and subsequently completed a BSc degree with a major in pathology. He practised with his father for 7 or so years before accepting the second lectureship in the Australian College of Optometry in 1962. He completed a PhD degree at the University of Melbourne in 1970, the second Australian optometrist to do so t an Australian university. He was promoted to Reader before accepting the chair in optometry at the University of NSW In 1997 Barry Collin was appointed a Member in the Order of Australia in 1997 to recognise his contributions to optometry and the science of medicine but also his contributions to his church and its schools and the performing arts.
