Description Of Item: Welch Allyn cased ophthalmoscope and endoscope diagnostic set. Ophthalmoscope has black head and chrome connector to battery handle. Ophthalmoscope marked 'WELCH ALLYN/ PAT.NO. 2027663/ MAY OPHTHALMOSCOPE/ WACO NO. 106/ AUBURN, N.Y., U.S.A.' Black battery handle with chromed metal fittings marked 'WELCH ALLYN CO AUBURN N.Y.' Chrome and black metal endoscope marked 'PAT. 2023945'. Four black plastic nozzles for endoscope labelled 'ADULT', '208', 'CHILD' and 'NASAL'. Case contains 3 spare globes and a green paper slip with cautionary notes of battery care. Black compartmentalised case lined with burgundy velvet. Case: 232 x 114 x 58 mm.
Historical Significance: The US Patent No 2027663 was granted to William Noah Allyn on January 4 1936 for improvements to his design for an ophthalmoscope previously patented on November 18 1924 as US Pat No 1516133. He was granted the US Patent No 2023945 on December 10 1935 for an endoscope to be used in the examination of the 'ear, nose, mouth and other internal parts of the body.'
