Historical Significance: Newton's Opticks was published in 1704. This book traces the historical evolution of ideas about the nature of light since that date. Later editions of Newton's Opticks were significantly altered in later editions and three competing theories of light are traced in the early chapters prior to the rise of the wave theory which was settled on about 1830 with the rise of the new style of science in the 19th century. The book focusses on writing in Britain and Ireland but of necessity also refers to writing and thoughts in the continental European countries.
