Gold Fixed Bridge Oval Rimless Pince Nez in Metal Snap Case

Description Of Item: Rimless pince nez with gold metal bridge with fixed nose pads. Bridge and pad arms are made from one continuous piece of 'wire' with lens clamps and nose pads soldered to it. Glass lenses are oval in shape 40 x 35 mm. Metal snap case 110 mm x 48 mm x 13 mm is covered in black textured fabric and lined with dark olive green velveteen. A blue label, edged with gold bearing the words Dobbie Bros., Ophthalmic Opticians and 122 Bourke Street, Melbourne is adhered to the inside of the case
Historical Significance: Dobbie Brothers, Cecil and Clarence had two practices in Melbourne at the time of the first registration of optometrists in Victoria in 1936. Cecil's practice was at 122 Bourke Street, Clarence's at 248 Little Collins Street. Examples of Dobbie Bros. promotional material are found in Cat Nos. 2594, 2810. Cecil was a member of the ACO Council in the 1940s.The pince nez style is listed but as 'Unknown' in Alan Leach's Atlas of Pince Nez (Cat No. 2038)
