Description Of Item: Six pairs of trial lenses for prescibing trifocals. The trial lenses have a plano power distance portion with a flat-top fused trifocal reading segment. The near addition of the 6 pairs range from 1.75 D to 3 D in 0.25 D steps. The lenses are mounted in gilded rims each with a handle marked with the power of the reading addition. The lenses are contained in a timber box with slots to take the lenses. Each pair of slots is marked with the near addition power on a white imitation ivory strip between the pairs of the same addition power. The box has a hinged lid lined internally with dark blue satin at the centre of which is the trademark UKO B&L. Catch marked 'CHENEY ENGLAND'. Case dimensions: 136 x 125 x 58 mm.
Historical Significance: United Kingdom Optical was founded as a private company in 1919, was incorporated in 1933 and became public company in 1936. It grew and diversified though mergers and amalgamations in the ensuing years up to 1950. It entered into a technical agreement with the USA based optical company Bausch and Lomb in 1950, hence the Trademark UKO B&L which was first registered in 1963 and expired in 1977. UKO ceased trading and was disolved in 2007.
