Description Of Item: Metal snap case, 125 X 55 mm, covered in patterned brown fabric and lined with wine-coloured velvet, gold stamped on the top with SYDNEY A WHITE / MEMBER OF THE VIC OPT ASSOC / 428 STURT STREET / BALLARAT
Historical Significance: Sydney Arthur White of 428 Sturt St, Ballarat was among the first optometrists to be registered in 1936 following the passage of the Victorian Opticians Act in 1935. He was registered under Section 8 of the Act that offered registration to those without formal qualifications on the grounds of significant prior experience in the practice of optometry. This case could date from the 1930s. An Arthur Sydney White 0f 71 Ormond St Elwood was also registered in 1936 following the passage of the Victorian Opticians Act in 1935 and was also was registered under Section 8 of the Act. He may have been a relation of S. A. White.
