Description Of Item: Three high power trial lenses in cardboard box. Lens magnifications: 6x, 4x, 2.5x. These high powered plus lenses were developed to provide optics most suited for use as reading low vision aids. The 3 lenses are in second-hand conventional trial case rims so the designation of power on the rim is irrelevant. Box: 148mm x 51mm x 14mm. Each lens 37mm diam. The powers of the lenses are identified by a label pasted on the underside of the box lid. The outside of the lide has a label ' LEDERER LENS TRIAL SET '.
Historical Significance: Professor Lederer (1921-2007) was professor of optometry at the University of NSW. He was the first professor of optometry in Australia. He advocated better optometric care for patients with low vision and designed this set of lenses to provide high plus correction for low vision. The design was published in Nature and Aust J Optom.
