Description Of Item: White rule,140 mm long x 42 mm wide, white plastic over wood, bevelled edge on length of rule, engraved with inch rule, mm rule and a ? 15 degree protractor on bevelled side, and a lens shape and two mm scales on the flat side. Marked OPTICAL P.D. RULE / Accurately > W & G < engraved / MADE IN AUSTRALIA. Wood ends marked B.D.
Historical Significance: This was a rule commonly used by Melbourne optometrists in the second half of the 20th C for measuring inter-pupillary distance. It may have been made by W&G Record Processing Co a Melbourne company that engraved slide rules (See Slide Rule Museum http://sliderulemuseum.com/Australia.htm). W&G Records was an Australian recording company that operated from the early 1950s to the 1970s. It was a subsidiary of the Melbourne precision engineering company White & Gillespie.
