Description Of Item: Brass and mother of pearl opera glasses. Barrels covered in mother of pearl cut to form tiny blocks. Focussing knob of mother of pearl with applied brass acanthus leaf decoration. Eyepieces both impressed 'LEREBOURS PARIS'. Size: 97 x 46 x 30 mm.
Historical Significance: Noel Jean Lerebours (1761-1840), optician to Emperor Napoleon, settled in 1789 at Quai de l'Horloge, Paris. His son was the famous daguerrotypist Noel Marie Paymal Lerebours (1807-1873) who took over the workshop from his father. After 1845 the firm was styled 'Lerebours & Secretan'.
