Historical Significance: The author is a retired ophthalmologist. This book is a very comprehensive listing of eye baths that have been made in a wide range of styles in countries around the world. There are several references to eye baths made in Australia. The book is copiously illustrated including beautiful illustrations of early decorated porcelain eye baths. Eye baths date back to the 16th C and were widely used from the 17th C. They have been made in a wide range of materials - silver, porcelain (often decorated), earthenware, stoneware, wood, aluminum, even rubber.
