Description Of Item: Illiterate E visual acuity chart, printed on stiff card, 292 x 544 mm, 9 lines of Es from 20/10 to 20/200, designed for use at 20 feet (approx 6 m) with sizes marked in Snellen notation (feet), and as the denominator of the Snellen fraction in both feet and metres, and with each line numbered from 1 to 9 in large size letters. At the bottom identified as '11842 Distance Test Chart' and 'copyright symbol BERNELL' There is a green bar and a red bar under 20/30 and 20/20 lines respectively.
Historical Significance: Bernell is a large supplier of vision test products and other materials for optometric practice. The original company was founded in 1954 by Dr. Bernard Vodnoy and his wife Nellie (hence BERnell). The company was rebuilt when it had financial problems in 1997 by two practising optometrists, Dr. Craig Andrews and Dr. Charles Shearer.
