Historical Significance: The original photograph is held by Optometry Queensland and Northern Territory. The Institute of Ophthalmic Opticians of Queensland was founded on October 1 1908 and was the second optometric association to be formed in Australia. The first was The Australasian Optical Association, founded in Sydney on June 7 1904, just 3 years after Federation of the six colonies to form the new nation of Australia. While the initial goal of the Australasian Optical Association, was to be national, the tyranny of distance defeated this ambition and it changed its name to the Institute of Ophthalmic Opticians of New South Wales in 1909. The Queensland Institute had 23 attend its inaugural meeting and it had 85 members at its first AGM. The foundation president in 1908 was Charles Sankey Fraser (1878-1953) who also an active participant in securing legislation in the State of Queensland for the registration of optometrists and the regulation of the practice of optometry in 1917. This was the second optometry Act to be passed in Australia, the first being in Tasmania in 1913. Sankey Fraser was also the first to suggest that there should be an Australian College of Optometry located in Sydney or Melbourne to serve the whole nation, an idea that came to fruition in Victoria in 1940. (Ref Comm Optom 1929; 9: 782-781.) Charles Sankey Fraser held the London Fellowships of FSMC and FBOA, which was uncommon in the early years of the 20th century, and was a third generation of optometrists in his family. His grandfather John Sankey and uncle, James Sankey, were optometrists and directors of the Brisbane optometric firm of Flavelles, where Charles began his own training in optometry. Charles Sankey Fraser had a son, Raymond, (1911-1953) who was the fourth generation of Sankey Fraser optometrists. Raymond practised in Swanston Street Melbourne. (See Cat No 2783 for another photograph of Sankey Fraser. See his profile in Comm Optom March 1924, p 5 and his obituary in Aust J Optom 1953, Jan p 41)
