Description Of Item: Digital image, 4500 x 3522, 600 dpi, 45 MB, of a photograph of the conference dinner held on 22nd May 1951 as part of the 18th Interstate Conference of Australasian Optometrical Association hosted by Institute of Optometrists Queensland (Inc). The dinner was held at the National Hotel, Brisbane. The photograph is mounted on a green slip with the name of the occasion above the photograph and the names of those pictured below.
Historical Significance: The original photograph is held by Optometry Queensland and Northern Territory. Noteworthy among those pictured are, G Westheimer, a then recent (1943) graduate of the Sydney Technical College optometry course and later the first Australian optometrist to gain a PhD degree and become professor at the University of California at Berkeley and a Fellow of the Royal Society, Wilfred Wenborn activist optometrist from NSW, Hamlyn Brier prominent optometrist in Queensland, Victor Simon, from NSW and the then President of the AOA, Eric Padman, from Tasmania and a leader in the profession and President of the AOA 1953 to 1956 and 1960 to 1963. Fred Werner from Victoria then active in the affairs of the AOA and a man always sure of his own opinions, and Noel Verney (1921-1980), from Queensland, who was in charge of optometric education in Queensland from 1949 until his death in 1980 at the age of 59.
