Historical Significance: This book gives a comprehensive account of the state of optometric practice in the USA in the 1940s and reflects the aspirations of the profession at the time. It has 26 Chapters covering the history and origins of optometry, its legal status, and legal constraints and risks, ethics, optometric manpower and earnings, public health and many other topics. It was written by Henry (Hank) Hofstetter OD PhD (1914-2002), who at the time was an Assistant Professor at Ohio State University and was later, from 1952, the founding Dean of the School of Optometry at Indiana University. He was an influential optometric leader from the late 1950s to beyond his retirement in 1980.Second copy Cat # 3646 is held in the Hewett collection.
