He moved to Australia in 1965 to become Associate Professor of ophthalmology at the University of New South Wales. He was appointed specifically to teach use of diagnostic drugs to optometrists but he succumbed to professional pressure and resiled from that undertaking. He made his name through good work delivering eye care to Australian aborigines and in developing countries, especially Nepal and Eritrea. He was made a Companion of the Order of Australia for this work and his name is used for the Fred Hollows Foundation that continues his work for disadvantaged peoples. This stamp was one in a series commemorating remarkable Australian physicians. He is wearing the half moon look-over glasses that became part of his 'image'.
