Historical Significance: Harry Freeman FBOA (Higher Diploma), FSMC, DOrth, FAAO was a noted English optometrist who devised a number of refraction tests in the 1940s and 1950s including this test, as well as the Freeman-Archer Subjective Unit and a variant of the duochrome test using Verhoeff rings.
