Description Of Item: Three screw top vials, two of which retain their original seals, each containing one soft contact lens tinted in an annular pattern. The tints are transparent of a single colour in spring green, sky blue or turquoise. Lens material tetrafilcon A (42.5% water). Label, partly removed to allow demonstration of colour, has pseudo-spectrum coloured background with lens parameters 8.9/14.4/-2.50 printed and expiry dates of 5/89 or 6/89.
Historical Significance: Tetrafilcon A was invented by Stanley Gordon, an American optometrist and contact lens practitioner and manufacturer in 1970. Gordon founded the Contact Lens Guild in 1958, which was re-named Gordon Contact Lenses in 1965. After the invention of tetrafilcon, Union Corps Optics Inc., a subsidiary of Union Corporation (An Airline and hotel company) bought Gordon Contact Lenses. Coopervision acquired UCO in 1983.
