Description Of Item: White cardboard box 118 x 78 x 47 mm to the top of which is affixed a label bearing the printed words Gelflex Triton Soft Lens Fitting Set and hand-written words Superseded 5/2003. The underside of the box bears #108 hand-written. The box contains cardboard dividers and 6 vials, 3 metal- capped, 3 re-sealable capped, each containing a soft contact lens either clear or with a blue handling tint. Vials bear a white and silver label, the silver section of which is framed in orange. This section bears the words Triton Translating Soft Bifocal Lens , Delta, Gelflex Laboratories and Manufactured by Gelflex Laboratories Perth WA 6017 Australia. The right hand white sections have typewritten lens parameters, the word trial, tint details and batch number ending in Z which identifies the year of manufacture as 2002. Base curves are 8.4 and 8.6 in 0.2 and diameters from 14.5 and 15.0. All are truncated with truncations varying from 1.1 to 3.1 mm in 0.5 mm steps.. Lenses are all labelled Plano, Add +2.00. The left-hand white section has printed Contains one sterile hydrophilic contact lens 45% Methafilcon A 55% water immersed in a 0.9% buffered saline solution. Caution: Law prevents dispensing without a prescription. Two laminated printed cards included in the box detail the lens parameters.
Historical Significance: Gelflex Laboratories is an independent contact lens manufacturer in Perth, Western Australia. Originally named Western Australian Contact Lens Manufacturing it was formed in 1971 by contact lens pioneer and innovator, Don Ezekiel. The Triton lens was developed as an alternative to the simultaneous vision bifocal lenses in an effort to give better vision for both distance and near visual tasks.
