Historical Significance: Leon Garner graduated in optometry at the University of Melbourne in 1964. He did a PhD degree at City University and took up a lectureship in optometry at the University of Melbournein 1970. He resigned to take up a post at the then Queensland Institute of Technology in 1975 but was too much of a fire brand for the QIT and his appointment was not renewed. He moved to the University of Auckland in 1978 where as senior lecturer he brought about great changes to the optometry course and the profession in New Zealand and was appointed to the foundation chair of optometry in the University of Auckland in 1989. He retired in 2003. This article provides details of his achievements at the University of Auckland and information on the development of the optometry course at that University.
