Historical Significance: Harris' career began at the beginning of the period when optometry expanded its scope and competence and built a new standing as a primary eye care profession. The article mentions a number of optometrists who provided leadership and who in Harris' opinion set the tone of optimism for the new era. They are Peter Dwyer, Graham Hill, Barry Cole, Dawn Odgers, John Nathan, Geoff Henry, Michael Aitken, Barry Collin, Arthur Ley, Damien Smith and Brian Layland. Ross Harris was involved in professional affairs from the time he first graduated and was national president of the AOA from 1981 to 1984. He is an honorary life member of the Optometry Australia and the Australian College of Optometry. His son, Andrew Harris was national president from 2007 to 2010 and 2011 to 2014.
