Historical Significance: The Victorian College of Optometry initiated a fund raising appeal in 1967 to 1971, that was authorised by the Council of the Victorian College of Optometry. The appeal was directed to Australian optometrists and others to obtain sufficient funds to build a national clinical research unit. David Cockburn, Barry Cole and Jean Colledge lead the fund raising campaign. The fund raising was successful and the National Vision Research Institute of Australia was established in 1972 as an autonomous entity within the College. This version of the constitution still embodies the original concept of the autonomous entity .
