Description Of Item: Reading optometer of brass, glass & ebonised wood. Brass cylindrical monocular eyepiece with double cell for trial lenses and left/right occluders. Ebonised wood handle. Brass holder of visual target moves along calibrated bar by rack and pinion gear. Imprint 'F.A.HARDY & CO/ OPTICIANS/ CHICAGO. ILL', 'PAT. APR. 29 1902'. U.S. Patent No 698833 was granted for this design to Francis A Hardy on April 29 1902. L:375mm x H:175mm x W:146mm.
Historical Significance: Fancis A Hardy had secured an earlier patent for an optometer, US268016 on November 28, 1882.
