Historical Significance: Ciba Focus Night and Day lenses, launched in 1999, were the first contact lenses made from a silicon hydrogel material. These materials allowed for significantly increased oxygen transfer through the lens without needing to rely on water content. Development was aimed at providing lenses suitable for overnight wear with little compromise to the cornea. One year after the launch 30,000 patients in over 40 countries were wearing the lenses for up to 30 nights of continuous wear. The Co-operative Research Centre for Eye Research (CRCERT) at the University of New South Wales partnered Ciba Vision in the development of the lens.
