Historical Significance: Omafilcon A was one of the first polymers which attempted to mimic the ocular surface. It is composed of HEMA and 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (PC) polymers crosslinked with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. PC is similar to phospholipids (e.g., phosphatidylcholine), which are molecules found naturally in human cell membranes. Omafilcon A is claimed to reduce tear evaporation.
