Description Of Item: This is a tiny book, with a card cover, 104 x 70 mm, with 86 pages followed by a near chart and a list of other books by the author. It was written at the request of the publisher for their "Golden Rules" series of which this is No 12. It cover apparatus, the dioptric system, measurement of lenses, retinoscopy, ophthalmoscopic refraction, test charts aphakia, general rules for correction, the refractive errors and presbyopia, astigmatism, prisms and decentration and frame fitting. Historical Significance: Maddox was an English ophthalmologist (1863 - 1933) who importantly elucidated the nature of bincular fusion and the components of convergence. He invented the Maddox rod and the Maddox wing test, the cheiroscope and the V test for astigmatism. He was ophthalmic surgeon at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Bournemouth, and formerly Assistant Ophthalmic Surgeon in the Royal Infirmary Ediburgh and Syme Surgical Fellow at Edinburgh University.
