Description Of Item: Framed black and white photograph (image 380 x 280 mm) with slip bearing the words 'The Opticians' Registration Board 1936-1937. Historical Significance: This photographs depicts the members of the first Opticians' Registration Board of Victoria. Earle Coles was the proprietor of Coles and Garrard Pty Ltd, the largest optometry firm in Victoria from the 1920s until it was purchased by OPSM and closed down in the 1990s. Dr T A'Beckett Travers and Dr Edward Gault were prominent ophthalmologists of the day. Mr SM Raphael was the proprietor of John Browning, a large optometry firm in Collins Street and Mr LRC Werner was the joint proprietor of another large optometry city firm Werners. Mr Nathan played important roles in obtaining an Opticians' Registration Act in 1935 and was influential in the early years of the Australian College of Optometry.
