Historical Significance: James Doggart (1900-1989) was a prominent English ophthalmologist who wrote a number of text books, with his 1952 text 'Ocular signs in slit lamp microscopy being the best remembered by optometrists who studied in the 1950s, in the days before slit lamps were to be found in optometric practice. He graduated MB BS from Cambridge in 1925 and was awarded an MA and a MD 6 years later. He became a FRCS in 1928 and worked in the orthoptic department of Moorfields Hospital and was ophthalmic surgeon at the Hospital for Sick Children.
