Historical Significance: David Cockburn, a Melbourne optometrist and member of the Victorian College of Optometry, lead a fund raising appeal in 1967 to 1971, that was authorised by the Council of the Victorian College of Optometry. The appeal was directed to Australian optometrists and others to obtain sufficient funds to build a national clinical research unit. He was supported by Barry Cole and Jean Colledge in the fund raising campaign. The fund raising was successful and the National Vision Research Institute of Australia was established in 1972.
