Historical Significance: This is an interesting late 19th C guide written by a New Orleans optometrist for his emerging profession. It contains chapters on optical lenses, refraction and the prescription of glasses. There is a chapter on the invention of spectacles and the early history of optometry. Of special value is a chapter consisting of short biographies of famous opticians and ophthalmologists providing information not readily available elsewhere.
