Historical Significance: Joseph Le Conte (1823-1901) was an American geologist. He studied medicine, graduating in 1845 but later studied natural history at Harvard. He was professor of natural science at various USA universities until moving to the University of California Berkely in 1869 where he was professor of geology and natural Science until his death. He published this monograph and some papers on psychology but his major contributions were in geology.This book was translated into German in 188 and a new edition was published in 1895 and 3. He also published 'Notes on physiological optics' in 1882.
