Description Of Item: 356 pages plus 47 pages of book adverts, 183 illustrations and one colour plate. The book is inscribed MacFarlane Parkville Feb 1903, probably E H MacFarlane ,a Melbourne optometrist.
Historical Significance: This is the first English edition: later printings and editions were published in 1976, 1881, 1884, 1894 and 1895. The German edition was Das Wesen des Lichts : gemeinfassliche Darstellung der physikalischen Optik in funfundzwanzig Vorlesungen Leipzig; Brockhaus (1874). Eugen Cornelius Joseph von Lommel (1837-1899) was a German physicist. He is notable for the Lommel polynomial and Lommel function. From 1860 to 1865 he was teacher of physics and chemistry at the canton school of Schwyz. From 1865 to 1867 he taught at the high school in Zurich and was simultaneously Privatdozent at the local university as well as at the polytechnic school. From 1867 to 1868, he was appointed professor of physics at the Akademie Hohenheim. Finally he was appointed to a chair of experimental physics in 1868 and then went to Munich in 1886, where he died in 1899.
