Historical Significance: This is a very comprehensive treatise on eye disease presented in a very mid 19th C style. See also cat No 38 for this author's book 'On long, short, and weak sight, and their treatment by the scientific use of spectacles' 1862. J. Soelberg Wells took the M.D. at the University of Edinburgh in 1856 and spent several years in Berlin as student and assistant of von Graefe. In 1860 Wells joined the staff at Moorfields in London, first as clinical assistant to Bowman and as surgeon from 1867 until his death. In 1865, Wells became professor of ophthalmology at King's College, London.
