Historical Significance: This is probably the first edition published in England. The earliest edition is 1869 published in the USA by W Wood and Co. Adolphe Ganot (1804-1997) wrote very influential textbooks on physics that were widely read in the 19th and 20th C. Joseph Simon undertook a PhD dissertation in the philosophy department of Leeds University on 'Communicating Science in 19th Century Europe: The Production, Distribution and Use of Ganot's Physics Textbooks' It is reported that Joseph Stanely Mitchell FRS (1909-1987) read Ganot's Physics by the time he was eight See Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the Royal Society, Vol. 34, Dec., 1988
