Description Of Item: Newspaper clipping from the Age Newspaper dated October 21 1960 featuring a photograph of Miss Yvonne Raphael, Lady Amies and Miss Meriel Wilmot taken on the occasion of the opening of the new College building. It reports that Miss Raphael presented a cheque 1000 pounds ($2000) to the College being money raised by the 'Women's Optometric Group.' It lists those in the official party for the opening and some guests. including Professor Lederer from the University of New South Wales and the President of the New Zealand Optometric Association. Also included is a newspaper clipping reporting 'Art sale brought ?5000' being a report of a fund raiser to equip the Australian College of Optometry when it moved into its new building in Cardigan Street Carlton.
Historical Significance: The clipping reports the official opening of the College's building in 1960. Miss Raphael was the principal of the optometry firm John Browings in Collins Street but was not an optometrist. At the time she was the President of a group made up of the wives of optometrists and some woaman optometrists that set about raising money to equip and furnish the new building. Lady Amies was the wife of the President of the College, Professor Sir Arthur Amies CMG. Meriel Wilmot (later Lady Meriel Wilmot-Wright) was the Secretary of the College. The 'art sale' clipping refers to a dinner held in 1958 organised by optometrists David Cockburn and Derek Gardiner that raised money by selling drawings of items of equipment that the College needed.Digital image 2.8 Mb in Museum iPhoto
