Historical Significance: Bruce Besley is a Melbourne optometrist who was very active in professional affairs. He was Victorian State President of the Optometrists Association 1961-62 and National President of the Association 1970-73. He was very much involved in the acceptance of optometry into the Australian goverment national medical insurance scheme then called Medibank in 1975. He was on the Council of the Victorian College of Optometry from 1957 to 1991 and was President from 1978 to 1991 during which time the College undertook major re-building. He was elected an honorary life member of the College in 1976. See also cat No 15 for his portrait. The Victorian College of Optometry was originally the Australian College of Optometry from 1940 to 1960 and reverted to that name in 2009.
