Historical Significance: Dr David Crewther worked in the National Vision Research Institute from 1979 to 1982 when he left to take up an appointment in the school of optometry at the University of NSW. He was a physicist who developed a passion for biological science and had worked with Dr (later Professor) Jack Pettigrew FRS at CalTech and came with him to the NVRI. He subsequently moved to Swinburne University where he was promoted to Professor in Swinburne's Brain Sciences Institute. The NVRI is a research arm of the Victorian College of Optometry
