Historical Significance: Professor Hughes was appointed Director of the NVRI in 1983 following the resignation of the foundation Director Donald Mitchell. He was the first Director of the NVRI to be accorded the title of Professor by the University of Melbourne. He resigned in 1989.The photograph was taken in Professor Cole's office as it was in c1983 in the first floor of the middle terrace house on Cardigan Street. The NVRI is a research arm of the Victorian College of Optometry
