Historical Significance: Dr Leon Garner graduated in optometry at the University of Melbourne in 1964. He did a PhD degree at City University and took up a lectureship in optometry at the University of Melbourne in 1970. He resigned to take up a post at the then Queensdland Institute of Technology in 1975 but was too much of a fire brand for the QIT and his appointment was not renewed. He moved to the University of Auckland in 1978 where as senior lecturer he brought about great changes to the optometry course and the profession in New Zealand and was appointed to the foundation chair of optometry in the University of Auckland in 1989. He retired in 2003. In photo 1 Dr Garner is seated at a card punch machine. In 1972 this is the way data was coded prior to input into a computer.
