Historical Significance: Dr Vingrys was an airline pilot who lost vision in one eye and had to choose a new career. He completed his optometry course in 1980 and did his PhD in optometry also at the University of Melbourne, under the supervision of Professor Cole, completing it in 1985. He did a post doc at the Ohio State University working with King-Smith and returned to Melbourne as a lecturer in 1987. He was promoted to Professor in 2007. He is a highly respected clinician and clinical teacher and a very productive researcher working in colour vision, visual ergonomics and later in nutrition and the development of the eye.
