He became a lecturer in the Department of Optometry at the University of Melbourne in 1985 and ran a sucessful research laboratory studying contact lenses and the eye with good support from the contact lens industry. He was promoted to Associate Professor before resigning to enter private practice and to engage in consulting work for the contact lens industry in 1994.
