Historical Significance: Dr Dain completed his optometry qualification at the City University London where he also completed his PhD degree in the subjct of abnormal colour vision. He came to Australia in 1973 to work as a research fellow of the VCO in Professor Cole's laboratory working on a project funded by the Commonwealth Department of Transport. The project was to study the faults and potential for improvement of motor vehicle signal systems (as depicted in the photograph). When the project finished at the end of 1975 he became lecturer in the Department of Optometry in the University of NSW where he stayed for the rest of his career, becoming Head of Department (1998-2006) and Professor. He made an international name for himself in visual ergonomics, standardisation and abnormal colour vision. He retired in 2006. His profile was published in Clin Exp Optom 2007; 90: 2: 143-146. Stephen Jenkins, also pictured, was a PhD student in Professor Cole' laboratory. he too became an expert consultant in visual ergonomics. illuminating engineering and standardisation and ran his own ergonomic consultancy company that also included radiometric and colorimetric services.
