Historical Significance: Dr Vingrys was an airline pilot who lost vision in one eye and had to choose a new career. He did a post doc at the Ohio State University working with King-Smith and returned to Melbourne as a lecturer in 1987. He was promoted to Professor in 2007. He is a highly respected clinician and clinical teacher and a very productive researcher working in colour vision, visual ergonomics and later in nutrition and the development of the eye. He supervised more than 19 PhD students (as at 2007) of whom the three in the photograph took out their PhD degree at the same ceremony.
