Historical Significance: Karl Theodor Paul Polykarpus Axenfeld (1867-1930) was a German ophthalmologist and director of the university eye clinic in Rostock and later professor of ophthalmology in Freiburg. He was involved in all aspects of ophthalmology and is associated with almost 200 written works concerning the eye, including an important textbook of ophthalmology in 1909. He also published numerous articles on glaucoma, retinal disorders, and trachoma. He was particularly interested in bacterial infections of the eye. Axenfeld has several eponymous ophthalmic terms named after him, including: Axenfeld's conjunctivitis, Axenfeld's nerve loop and Axenfeld syndrome.
