Description Of Item: Orange-red card cover, 24 pp, signature of John Nathan on title page, with a black plastic slip-on cover gold embossed on the front 'The Australian College of Optometry' with the College crest and inside the front of the slip-on cover gold embossed 'Presented to Alan Isaacs on April 26th 1958 by the College Council as an expression of appreciation for untiring services to the Australian College of Optometry during the years 1946-1955' . The slip on cover has a grease paper wrapper. Also with this item is a letter undated addressed to Alan Isaacs on letterhead of the Australian College of Optometry signed by J B Arnott, Secretary, conveying the thanks of the Council and offering the bound copy of the College Handbook as an expression of thanks.
Historical Significance: Alan Isaacs completed the optometry course of the Victorian Optical Association in 1943 (see certificate dated April 1944 Cat No 535). He immediately became a junior teaching clinician and continued clinical teaching until 1955, as a senior clinician from 1946. He lectured in Binocular Vision Part I and II from 1947 to 1954. He was a member of the College Council from 1947 to 1966 and from 1971 to 1979. He was a member of the Education Committee 1947-1954 and a member of the Handbook Committee from 1946 producing in 1947 the first handbook of the optometry course of the College that set out the regulations and a detailed sylabus of the course. It was set out in the style of the University of Melbourne course handbooks. The hanbook shows that in 1948 the course comprised: first year: Physics* Chemistry* Zoology* and History of Optometry. Second year: Physiology and Biochemistry*, Anatomy (of the eye), Ocular Physiology, Binocular Vision Part 1, Bacteriology, Optics. Third year: Pathology, Psychology, Visual Optics, Binocular Vision Part II, Orthoptics, Clinical Practice Part I, Laboratory Practice Part 1, Fourth Year: Clinical Practice part II, Occupational Optometry, Ophthalmic Lenses, Ethics, Jurisprudence and Practice Management, Laboratory Practice Part II. Subjects marked * were subjects in the BSc course. Handbooks for 1948, 1949, 1952, 1953 and 1957/8 are Cat Nos 536, 958, 103, 537 and 959
