Description Of Item: White card, single fold, 123 mm x 158 mm when folded, setting out the menu for a celebratory dinner in honour of Professor Barry Cole on the occasion of his retirement. It lists the wines and courses of the dinner and on the back page the guests attending. Inside the menu card is is a place card in the name of Dr Alan Isaacs with the crest of the Melbourne Club where the dinner was held.
Historical Significance: Professor Cole was the first full time lecturer in the Australian College of Optometry, taking up appointment in mid 1959. He became Director of Studies in 1964 and Director of the College in 1973, a position in which he continued until December 1998. He was appointed the foundation head of the Department of Optometry at the University of Melbourne in 1973 and appointed the foundation professor of optometry in 1978. He retired on March 31 1999. The dinner was held on the occasion of his formal retirement at the Melbourne Club.
