Historical Significance: This is a well written history of the telescope but inevitably involves the story of the development of optics and the contributions of optician/instrument makers especially since the telescope was invented by opticians. The book is scholarly but written in an easy to read style. For example the back cover gives a tabloid headline for the inventor of the telescope, Hans Lipperhey 'Forty-five year old unmarried father of three with mistress perfects telescope and probes universe'.
