Historical Significance: These notes record John Nathan's recollections of the contributions and personalities of the councillors of the Australian College of Optometry and those involved in teaching 1940 to 1950. They were prepared at Barry Cole's request since those who have personal memories of this period were aged over 80 at the time the notes were written. The notes were reviewed by Alan Isaacs, a councillor and teaching in the 1950s, as was John Nathan, and his observations are recorded in footnotes. John Nathan was the first LOSc diplomate of the College in 1944. He was Clinic Director 1947 - 1949, Director of Studies 1950 to 1964 and the third President of the College from 1970 to1978. He taught as a highly respected part time teacher for over 30 years and one of the team of three who started research in the Victorian College of Optometry in 1961. He was awarded an honorary DSc degree by the University of Melbourne in 1994. See VCO Archive Cat Nos 1, 7, 20.
