Historical Significance: This is the the proceedings of a conference held in New York on January 31 and February 1 1958. The idea for a conference on photoreception arose at a meeting of the Section on Biology of the New York Academy at which a paper by Jerome Wolken on the comparative study of photoreceptors aroused great interest. The papers presented and reported in this monograph include papers by JJ Wolken, KT Brown, F Crescitelli, JE Dowling, KH Hartline, R Hubbard, EF MacNichol, MH Pireene, G Svaetichin, G Wald, and TN Weisel, all of whom were outstanding vision scientists of the time and into the 1960s and 1970s.The monograph reflects the state of knowledge of photoreceptors at the time, just prior to some momentous discoveries.
